It was the brainchild of the cheaters that ran the Summerville Football program. After an initial rule change allowing kids just 4 years of High School eligibility, those same cheaters decided to circumvent the rule by holding kids back in elementary and middle school. Of course, the parents had to agree to sign off on this. It is now no longer allowed. But good ole dook for brains graduated from there, and cannot stand to have the truth about his idol talked about in public. A coach with a record of winning games with college aged players playing against high school kids.
i could care less what yall say .use what u gotta use to win.(the Carolina way right)
You can still do it they have to prove thats what your doing it for.
Any kind of medical condition nomatter how trivial will sink thier butt and the schl knows it. 4th grader gets held back for speech therapy or many other reasons.so 5 years later the schl going to say you were heldback for football or that reason. Dont believe it jerome aint risking his job over that.

Just saw Penquin's post and he is correct!!! I grew up in Goose Creek (75 to 82) and it was well known McKissick and crew would hold back 8th graders and get them to "repeat" the 8th grade. It was like a redshirt deal in college. Those that repeated 8th grade played JV to learn the Wave system. Seniors playing should have been freshman in college. They were always bigger and stronger. It really helped them on OL and DL. They would just wear you down and out by the second half. This was during their 3 year run of being undefeated and winning the state championship 3 years in a row.

Do the names Perry Cuda and Jimmy Harrell ring a bell? Try getting a sophmore or junior in High School tackle a "freshman" who should be in college one on one - see how that works out. Summerville did the same thing with a running back in the late 70's early 80's - I think his last name was Standford Jennings - who was a bull. Went on to play at Furman and in the NFL for the Bengals. I should know - he flattened me like a pancake more than once....

Thank you Chuck. A.J. Green was the last really prominent player to be redshirted. There was so much stink raised about that, that the SCHSL changed the rules the next year. I find it humorous that Summerville grads feel the need to deny and deflect when the facts are presented. I didn't realize your profile here. Glad to see some old posters hanging around.

I know back in the late 70's, early 80's, I am pretty sure that the age limit was 20. And want to think that one could turn 20 during a season, but couldnt start a season in that same school year after 20th birthday.
As far as the practice of kids being held back in elementary and middle schools. Used to be done quite a bit years ago. Especially in the smaller, one school towns. Has largely been eliminated, but it has happened a lot more recent as one would think. Just on an individual level.

I thought same thing Penguin when Chuckster put that pic on. Haven’t heard or seen Don on the board in awhile. Met him @ Perry Cudas hot dog place in Summerville.
