Just saw Penquin's post and he is correct!!! I grew up in Goose Creek (75 to 82) and it was well known McKissick and crew would hold back 8th graders and get them to "repeat" the 8th grade. It was like a redshirt deal in college. Those that repeated 8th grade played JV to learn the Wave system. Seniors playing should have been freshman in college. They were always bigger and stronger. It really helped them on OL and DL. They would just wear you down and out by the second half. This was during their 3 year run of being undefeated and winning the state championship 3 years in a row.

Do the names Perry Cuda and Jimmy Harrell ring a bell? Try getting a sophmore or junior in High School tackle a "freshman" who should be in college one on one - see how that works out. Summerville did the same thing with a running back in the late 70's early 80's - I think his last name was Standford Jennings - who was a bull. Went on to play at Furman and in the NFL for the Bengals. I should know - he flattened me like a pancake more than once....
For the record... Perry Cuda did stay back a year but he still only graduated at 18. He started school in the Georgia system and was a year ahead of his class when they moved to sville .. and as for A.J Green he repeated the 6th grade due to grades...
During the mid 70's the summerville school system was very over crowded and the 6th-8th grades were forced to do split sessions some parents felt that their kids needed the extra year of education ...
Summerville was dominate during that time frame because we had good little league programs and a lot of the kids got started playing together at an early level and had 4 to 5 years under their belt before they entered high school.. our little league teams had over 50 kids each...and at the start up of spring practice over 500 kids came out for the football team and the varsity team would consist of approximately 120 kids By the time the season started in which only 80 players would dress per game . So you always had to check the locker room at 8am Friday morning to find out if you would dress for the game that night. Because 40 kids wouldn't.... the Wave program was dominate because of the dedication and the hard work of the kids because the Monday -Wednesday practices were tougher than most teams we played on Friday nights.

Wave 80....No question about the youth leagues developed in Summerville. Coach McKissick was one of the first to develop a feeder system that transitioned to his High School program. Likewise, your coaching staff at the time was one of the best. However, there were many, many discussions about the need for a new High School due to the enrollment numbers. This had a negative impact on non-student athletes and the quality of their education given the overcrowding and staggered school hours. I remember WCSC TV doing an investigative report on this and it always came down to THE VILLE not wanting to "hurt" the football program by adding a new high school. There was indeed enough talent for two high schools - especially given your point that 40 kids could not dress due to the so called 80 man roster rule........

Do you remember the old days when they would actually pay teams to come to their place to play every year? That way they didn't have any travel expenses. They would have 8 or 9 home games every season.

I remember many times when they came to Beaufort to play, that the referees actually got of the bus with their team. They traveled with their own referees.
