Why wouldn't he leave?
1. He took Woodmont about as far as he could, more wins this year than Woodmont generally gets in 2-3 combined. The senior class at Woodmont had some good players going all the way back to D team days, but Woodmont unfortunately loses players to other schools every year.
2. Woodmont had the fortune of playing in arguable the weakest 5A region in the state. I would say Upstate 2A powers Saluda, Abbeville, and Southside Christian could beat every team in that region this year, except maybe TL Hanna but they were inconsistent. So, the wins will go down as the region builds back up. I've watched some games in that region last couple of years...bad teams and it shows in the playoffs every year.
3. Now, from what I hear, there is talent in Woodmont area, kids just don't play and no real community or town to support it.
4. His offense just really can't win at 5A level, at least without a feeder system. Abbeville can beat most every team in 5A with that style offense because they have been living and breathing the system since birth. Greenville County with choice, magnet schools and so on...well, there is no feeder true feeder system from rec ball and up.
5. I'll get crucified for saying this, but let's face it, most 5A teams in Greenville County, JL MANN, Riverside, Woodmont, and Wade Hampton all have 2A and 1A talent. I hear Riverside is petitioning to move down to 1A, 2A, or at least 3A and if it isn't granted they may possibly leave SCHSL and go independent and play SCISA? Not sure if they can do that, but I have definitely heard first hand from an AD in Greenville they are peitioning to move down.
Greenville County football just isn't good overall, for whatever reason. There are good teams from time to time and some of that depends on choice. But, overall just not strong like Spartanburg County and others. Best team in the County last 2 years has probably been Southside Christian and I would loved to have seen Southside Christian vs Greer last year! That would have been a good game. Someone with Southside Christian told me that Greenville County schools refuse to play them.
Anyway, smart move for Jet Turner, Blacksburg is a great football "community" and he can do well there...good luck to him!

Just a note. Greenwood didn't have a good year, but they blasted Hanna who you had as the exception. Things are about to get back to normal for Greenwood. It will be competitive again.goldenstripfootball wrote:Why wouldn't he leave?

I think Jet did a GREAT job at Woodmont. And he'll do great things at Blacksburg. The problem with Woodmont right now is the AD. He has no clue about anything football related and nobody on the staff respects him. Rumor is he considering interviewing some to the rec league coaches from the area for this HC job. That should tell you all you need to know.

Have kids left Greenwood for Abbeville? People here in the Upstate wonder that at times? Abbeville is as big and strong as almost any 5A team...heck 4 players in Shrine Bowl last 2 seasons. And I mean no offense to this, because Greenwood has a very long and storied history, but I think if they played this year Abbeville wins 10 out of 10 times. Again, just my opinion. Greenwood should and will be back, but just curious if any of those Abbeville kids came up through Greenwood?

Kids have left Greenwood for the streets.
If you combined Emerald and Greenwood into one school, they'd beat the brakes off of everyone (if the right coaching staff is running the show).
Pippin and McMahon ran those programs into the ground.

You make good points but I think my comment about why wouldn't he leave should've been worded a little different and to mean that why would he not leave to go to Blacksburggoldenstripfootball wrote:Why wouldn't he leave?

Re: Why would Jet Turner
thought we were discussing Woodmont, Jet Turner and Greenville county. Does every thread have to be about Greenwood?
Re: Why would Jet Turner
Don't know a whole lot about either program but I know if Turner had success at a place like Woodmont he must be a pretty decent coach. Blacksburg will be a good challenge. I also think a lot of people are forgetting that how successful or lack thereof a team is will depend a lot (but not always) on what region they get put in next realignment. The region Blacksburg has been in the past two years was rather weak minus Southside Christian.

Again , that is why I have said several times on this board that Coach Porter deserves a chance to land a BIG TIME 5A job!!
That is something we may never see in our lifetime again. 5A GC team win the biggest classification in football!
