So there’s no room to expand Crestwood and Lakewood?

Comparing this proposed 5A with the original Dept of Education list shows the adjustments only affected two schools in the top 40.

(39) Ridge View, (40) Dutch Fork and (51) Chapin received allocations which moved Chapin up to 5A and dropped (38) West Florence to 4A.

There is no way Chapin is 5A. I have heard there are only a handful of kids that attend Spring Hill that play ANY sports for Chapin, and I would bet you could count the number of ones that play football, baseball and basketball on one hand. You are going to move them up FOURTEEN SPOTS for that?? That doesn't seem right at all.

Wonder how many (if any) kids attend Spring Hill and plays sports for Dutch Fork or Irmo? DF was sitting at the cutoff line for 5A based on the Department of Education #'s.

Why can't these schools count only the kids that actually participate in a sport at their "zoned school" in their enrollment numbers? THEY DON'T ATTEND THESE SCHOOLS so how are they included in enrollment?!?!?! Where is this in the by-laws or constitution that this is the way to handle magnet schools or open enrollment districts?

And poor Mid-Carolina. Good Lord, that region... And you put two Rock Hill School in a Region in Columbia?!?

Again... WHO made this proposal? Does ANYONE know? Is this a committee of people who sat down and thought, "This is good"? Or did Jerome just draw it it up however he felt like it?

I would say it's laughable... but ain't no one laughing that I have heard from.

I still say this state is too small for 5A. The system we had before was about as fair as you can make it. D1 was basically 5A but we all played together in region play where now you can’t make regions work with 40 or less teams. They wanted 5 classes and now we have an unfair mess to the bottom schools. I still haven’t figured out how WF is in 4A and Conway in 5A. I want to see the enrollment numbers.

According to the Department of Education:
#37 West Florence - 1290 (9th-11th)
#41 Conway - 1282 (9th-11th)

That's a whopping 8 students...

Crestwood and Lakewood were both built in 1996. When they opened they had over 1500 students each and at that time, Sumter HS had just at or over 3000. When CW/LW opened they were both 4A programs and Sumter was Big 16.

LW/CW can hold a lot more students than 1000...whoever said that is not correct.

I don't know who is "cooking the numbers" or on what level they're being cooked, but CW is a 4A - that side of the county is growing towards Columbia. LW's side is not growing, and they only have one feeder program/middle school.

Either way, Sumter HS gets hosed again on travel - minimum 1.5 hour trip for any region game?? That's crazy. Not to mention the coach/bus driver who has to work all day and now all night, etc.

Even if you stuck Sumter in the Columbia regions you are still talking big travel times. Sumter has always been a difficult placement because of geography... I agree that the only thing to do from a SCHSL stance would be to balance the schools somehow to create a Region in that area between SHS, CHS and LHS with maybe Spring Valley and..... and.... hhmmm.... see what I mean?

I am not too sure that Sumter Co has the resources to try and balances the schools physically, anyway.

Um... no... you count the kids physically IN your building, then count anyone else who comes to your school to play.

Here's a question... do we count all the private school kids who live in a public district? Do we count every Home-schooled kid? Do we count every kid taking virtual school that happens to live in a particular district?

Just curious. Guess we need to count them, too.
