Where did you read this? Didn't see it in any news outlet. Just curious.96fanatic wrote:I read that Abbeville voted to build a new school

They must've put it up after I searched earlier. I'll look again. This is interesting. No Fly Zone wrote:Index Journal has the story upeagle93 wrote:Where did you read this? Didn't see it in any news outlet. Just curious.96fanatic wrote:I read that Abbeville voted to build a new school

Re: Abbeville
The board approved a process to proposing a referendum that would build a new countywide high school, renovate Dixie High and convert it to a middle school, and make small improvements to the elementary school in Calhoun Falls.
The next few board meetings will iron out the exact wording of the proposal, the estimated costs, a target date to put it on the ballot, and a few other details, such as deciding whether to propose a countywide high school with no new athletic facilities (continue to use existing ones), or proposing one with new athletic facilities.
All of the above is fact. Now for my opinion....
I'm doubtful it'll pass, but I hope I'm wrong. It's the usual case of "no new taxes", too much individual school pride, etc. I know there are a lot of voters who will vote yes. It's a matter of making sure they get to the polls.
Anyone who has been to Dixie or Abbeville High knows we need new facilities. We cannot keep sending our kids to poorly maintained schools that are 60+ years old. It might've been different if they had done renovations and updates over the years, but they have not.

Re: Abbeville
To answer that question, possibly. I do know that a combined high school would have less than 1000 students. We will be either a large AA school or a very small AAA one.No Fly Zone wrote:Would that put them at a count high enough for 3A?96fanatic wrote:I read that Abbeville voted to build a new school

After I read the article I'm inclined to agree with you. Ain't nothing gonna happen. The folks will vote it down.AHS14 wrote:The board approved a process to proposing a referendum that would build a new countywide high school, renovate Dixie High and convert it to a middle school, and make small improvements to the elementary school in Calhoun Falls.

Abbeville school board motions to move forward with consolidation, renovation plan
By JONATHAN LIMEHOUSE

In a 5-3 vote, Abbeville County school board members approved having staff prepare a bond resolution that would provide for a new countywide high school, renovations to Dixie High School to convert it into a middle school and renovations to John C. Calhoun Elementary.
The board’s decision puts into motion a possible referendum that would allow Abbeville residents to vote on whether to consolidate Abbeville and Dixie high schools. Abbeville County Council would have to approve placing a referendum on a ballot before it could go to voters.
