FLORENCE, S.C. -- Florence One Schools superintendent Richard O'Malley said in Thursday night's called board meeting the 2020-21 school year will not start until Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day.
Staff will report Aug. 24, and the school year's conclusion is pushed back to June 11. Under the previous plan, which featured a year-round format announced in February, staff members would have returned to school July 27, with students starting class Aug. 3.
Now, for the 2020-21 school year, Thanksgiving break will be two days this upcoming school year, instead of three. And, relating to Christmas break, Dec. 23 is now a half day.

I actually prefer an after labor day start even without the virus. We started after labor day when I was in school. If I remember correctly. If so, I don't remember why that changed.

One of the issues is we have added many more days off within the school year in the last 30 or so years. We used to just get 10 days off for Christmas, but that has expanded into 12-13 days in many districts. MLK day is now a day off. We used to just take 2 days off for Easter, now its a full week. Thanksgiving used to be 2 days, now its 3. In addition, there are more random Teacher Workdays than before. We also take 2 days off in mid October that we used to not do. Those all add up to 2-3 weeks, which is the reason for earlier starts. A calendar that starts after Labor Day and ends the Friday before Memorial Day would be best, in my opinion.cavaliereagle wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 7:33 amI actually prefer an after labor day start even without the virus. I totally agree with your calendar. My last one graduates this upcoming school year. I'd still like for the other kids to have the opportunity to do it the old way. It just seemed better. I'm seriously considering adopting 1 or 2 boys after he graduates. It will help keep me busy. Also. not to toot my own horn, but I think I have alot to offer these kids that no one seems to care for. Of course, I believe the same can be said for the majority of the posters on this site. There are some good men on here.FootballFan4343 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 9:47 amOne of the issues is we have added many more days off within the school year in the last 30 or so years. Wow!!!! I know that when I was in School we started back after Labor Day. If High School Football starts back on August 21st then that means that Florence County Schools will not start back until a little more then 2 weeks after their 1st game.SF Band dad wrote: ↑Sun Jun 28, 2020 11:22 pmFlorence 1 Schools will now start Sept. 8

We used to start after labor day up in NC. I recall one year we started two weeks later because it had been a wet growing season and they needed the extra time to get the tobacco and cotton harvest done.cavaliereagle wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 7:33 amI actually prefer an after labor day start even without the virus. I don't know if it's true but a teacher once told me they keep shifting the start earlier to get more instruction days in before the state standardized tests.

I think it's cool that it was delayed for harvest.SF Band dad wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 9:15 pmWe used to start after labor day up in NC.
