You abuse them you not going to have them and games will be canceled. They not perfect people and neither are we so let’s support them best we can. Do they make awful calls? Yes. Do they make correct calls? Yes. We need them. Young people are avoiding going into officiating because of the hatred directed at refs. They are good people just like we are.
Awesome post Itsmeoclock21! I completely agree with you. I admire the job that most Officials/Refs do. Yes, they make some terrible calls sometimes but hey that is part of the game. I wish that more people would go in Officiating. They are really short-handed right now. I think they make pretty good money. I have some people right now trying to get me to become an Official.

I told a very prominent person in high school athletics 10-15 years ago that they needed to add one dollar to ticket prices for nothing but extra money to lure more officials. But it was never even considered I don't think. Even though ticket prices have risen from 5 to 7 in most places. Now I suppose they are probably splitting the processing fee with the internet site provider with most all now selling tickets online. But what they are paying isn't enough for most folks to endure the abuse from fans, and from some coaches. And not everybody can do it. Most times it requires the job flexibility where someone has to be able to get off before 5 to accommodate the travel.
I have two good friends that have been college officials for over 25 years each. One who was head of assignments for the ACC and now retired, and one who still officiates for the SEC. We had this discussion recently about HS officiating and they agree it is becoming harder to get people to get into this field. The travel, not being able to watch their kid's games, the pay, and the continued and growing attitude of the fans and coaches.
The fact is having watched untold hours of film over my lifetime, the majority of the time the officials get it right without the ability to have an instant replay to review. Sure they miss calls but so do the NFL and the NCAA. These friends of mine shared that they could probably make a call on 35-40% of the plays run if they analyzed each individual player on each play. The game would be boring and people would be more pissed than they are now.
I remember a game where after the game we were walking back to our cars/buses and discussing a couple of calls we disagreed with when two gentlemen asked what we disagreed with the calls about. As it turned out they were officials who had changed clothes and were on their way to their cars. They politely explained the angle that was seen and we better understood the call. Sometimes the angle we see things from the field/stand is not the same. A mentor coach once told me that aggravating the officials only makes them put more of a microscope on you. That includes the fans. Remember they have families and a life outside of that game and we need them more than they need us.

They played a good game and deserved the "W"!
Just finished watching the New England vs Tampa game and saw so many calls that were missed in this game that they showed in the replay. If an NFL official who makes an avg of over $200,000 a year can screw up, then a guy who makes $75 dollars a game is entitled to a lot of latitude!! Imagine all the missed calls at the high school level!! College officials avg $800-$3000 per game.

I try to give officials credit where it is due, we need them and I give them full credit for participating in a thankless job. That said, I know also that I have seen some very sketchy officiating at times. When a really good team is playing a not so good team, and, the good team is running up and down the field all night, only to be flagged 5 times for holding, and, the not so good team is flagged 0 times for holding, it makes one wonder how that could be correct. The worst officiated games are when the refs are just throwing flags all night. The players are not perfect but neither are the refs, let them play and call only the obvious.
