that would be really fun to watch. He could for sure bring them up to DF's level

Re: Dave Gutshall Retiring…
Dave Gutshall retiring is bad news for upstate 5A schools. The next head coach there will turn them into a true powerhouse football school. Gutshall only won 2 state titles with the talent he had at his disposal. Chris Miller will be the next head coach at Dorman. At least my Vikings have a head start before he turns things around!! ![Cool 8-)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

Donnie Littlejohn would be an outstanding head coach for Dorman. ![👀](//twemoji.maxcdn.com/2/svg/1f440.svg)

Unfortunately the is the myopic view of the uninformed. Please tell us how Gutshall has been holding back Dorman with the rich history that was there prior to his arrival.Victory6 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 17, 2021 4:06 pmDave Gutshall retiring is bad news for upstate 5A schools. Prior to his arrival Dorman did not have 3000 students and a high school the size of a small university. He did turn them into a better program BUT with the talent they've had for years they should have won at least 5 Championships. He NEVER had the guts to make the big call. I've personally seen twice where he was afraid to go for it on 4th and 1 which would have won big games for his team. I don't go to Dorman games unless they're playing Spartanburg but i've heard a lot of Dorman fans say the same thing about his coaching style. I think what Vicky is trying to say is with Dorman being the second largest school in SC is that for all of the athletes 2 out of 9 appearances with state title. There are so many walking the halls that didn’t want to play because of Gutshall. Dorman isn’t going to pay 6 figures for a head coach so Miller is out and he could retire right now if he wanted that being said they will probably go out of state for a coach and AD.

Go back and look at the many Spartanburg seasons and you can say that the Vikings choked many times come playoff time. Did Carr and Sitterle and Johnson never 'have the guts' to win the big games they were involved in? Spartanburg had the student numbers you talk about with all these coaches.Victory6 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:06 amPrior to his arrival Dorman did not have 3000 students and a high school the size of a small university. Re: Dave Gutshall Retiring…
Dorman will pay well north of 100,000 for a coach. I agree Miller will not be the next head coach. I agree Dorman should have more than 2 titles, and so close so many times, losing on the final play several times. He was a risk taker in many on those games, going for 2 points instead of going for one to tie the games. First 10 years were gold, he did bring Dorman up a notch in football. If that coach had of been around the last 10 years, you would have seen more fans and ex-players upset about him retiring. I was told last year Dorman will do a search across the southeast, if not nation to get the next coach. It will be about building a program from middle school up.Spartanburgvikings95 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:16 amI think what Vicky is trying to say is with Dorman being the second largest school in SC is that for all of the athletes 2 out of 9 appearances with state title. Re: Dave Gutshall Retiring…
True. Gutshall tried it and our football program suffered for it before he went back to full time coaching.Rebel-Fan-74 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 4:17 pmWith all that is involved at Dorman, I don't see Head Coach and AD as being a realistic possibility. Too much for one person....DHSCavsFan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 3:58 pmSo Dorman will not be hiring someone internally, they will do a search throughout the southeast for the best coach. It will be a good job, maybe add the AD title to the job for higher pay. I remember when Gutshall came, he was a different coach then what he is today. Dorman also changed during that time as well, where you had enough talent in the school to win.
I have been thinking about this for probably the last ten years. Every time I thought it might be time for him to hand over the reigns he'd get us to the WOC and we'd bring a good game even if we didn't win. For all the nay sayers and chicken littles out there (and there aren't many) who say Gutshall didn't live up to the position, for the last two decades there was a long way to fall as a Dorman fan of a football program without Gutshall at the helm.
Look at Gaffney, Spartanburg, Byrnes....all programs that I did not envy for the last ten years with the coaching uncertainty.
I'm inspired to connect some good dots and write a good post about the Gutshall era.
