Greenwood fans, Has Coach Liner met your expectations so far?

Post by GwoodEagle2k1 »

For me he has. Liner has gotten Greenwood back in the 4A conversation thus far. If we look at what he's had to deal with since he became the coach I think he's done an tremendous job. We weren't able to have a full year his 1st season due to all the covid stuff but he brought the excitement back into the program. We weren't blown out by anyone and all games lost went down to the wire.

His 2nd season (last year) was a hell of a ride. He helped bring a region title back to Greenwood. That hasn't happened since Cathcart was the coach. That region title is an extremely important building block to get a program headed in the right direction. We got blown out by Dutch Fork but the kids played really hard until the clock hit zero. They kept fighting in spite of the game getting away from us. That was ANOTHER thing that hadn't been in the program since Cathcart. I'm talking about the physical and mental toughness it takes to bounce back after a loss like that. That stuff has to be COACHED in order to get it out of the kids. Then the heartbreaking loss to South Pointe in the 3rd round in a game that went back and fourth the entire night. What do I take from that loss? HEARTBREAK. It hurts to lose again. That's a good thing. That means we're doing well enough in order for it to hurt when you lose. That's another thing that faded away after Cathcart left. It stopped hurting lose. When you start getting numb about losing, that's not good. Means your getting used to it. You never want your program to be in that position. Even though I know we had a team capable of going all the way last year, only lost to Dutch Fork (Class 5A Runner Up) and South Pointe (Class 4A Champion). With the addition of the region title, the kids have NOTHING to be ashamed of. Just gotta take another step.

I'm really excited about the future of Greenwood football with Liner and how far we can go. I really like that he's brought his version of the triple option back to Greenwood. The kids are built for it. It's made the kids tougher and most importantly Liner is getting the MOST out of the talent we have. Everyone wants to run the spread/air raid but smart coaches do what's best for the kids they have. Liner is a smart coach and we're fortunate to have a head coach and staff that care so much about the Greenwood football brand and product. These coaches don't care about making themselves look good over the kids having a fun successful experience in the program. These coaches really care about these kids and it shows.

One last thought,
Some people including myself wanted Greg Porter to get the Greenwood job over Liner. Even though I think Porter would have still had success I'm happy I was wrong about it. Liner hasn't lost to Porter yet as the Greenwood coach and beaten Porter twice in big games. That speaks for itself. I tip my cap to you Coach Liner.

Liner is doing a good job so far. Greenwood has only had 7 head coaches. J. W. Babb, Willis Burkett, Mike Martin, Shell Dula, Gene Cathcart, Dan Pippin, and Chris Liner. Majority of these were excellent hires aside from a few. Mike Martin tried to take the damn G off the helmet

Keep working hard Coach Liner! The Greenwood community is behind you. If any greenwood kids are reading this, listen to Liner. He knows what he's talking about when he comes to Greenwood. He's the only head coach to be a former player and graduate of Greenwood. And he's a Clemson Tiger! :D :D

Liner is a good coach. He is bringing the toughness back but the key is he's running the right offense. You don't have to be a rhodes scholar to figure all that out. Run a system that put the players in a position to be successful. I aint sayin its all simple and easy but some stuff is common sense........... Can't argue with a coach that does things that make sense. If the triple option wasn't working he'd change it to something else. Not keep doing the same stuff over and over......Effective positive change makes for a good coach. We have that.

I agree with what has been said. Liner has proven he can win a championship at least in some capacity..... Region champs. Next step is winning that long lost state title. Only thing I didn't like in the south pointe game was we punted with about 5 min left hoping they defense would get a stop. We didn't get the ball back until it was too late. Sometimes you just gotta go for yours when you have an opportunity. Just my opinion of course. I'm not an armchair coach. I do like that the program is heading in the right direction. Doesn't happen overnight. Gotta keep digging till you get that state title. I'm convinced Liner and the kids can do it. Keep working hard Greenwood!!

Yes. He is as passionate as anyone I've known about Greenwood and it being successful. He might be the most personable coach we've had at Greenwood. Very easy person to talk to and always responds when I message or email him. I must admit. He wasn't my first choice, but I can admit that I was wrong. He is the right person for Greenwood. I also should say, even though I didn't agree with the previous coach's philosophy for coaching he was also very personable to me. Liner seems more genuine though. If he tells you he is going to do something that's usually how it goes. Ex. Previous coach said we'd be 60/40 run/pass from the spread. We were more like 95/5 run/pass towards the end. Which is fine, but maybe change the offensive scheme to something that fits those numbers.

We should have hired Liner back in 2014 instead of the previous coach. Probably would have had several titles by now. The previous coach had some loaded teams at Greenwood.
