Northwestern v Spartanburg Scrimmage

Post by sparked_up »

Last nights Scrimmage was good for both teams. Most importantly, everyone went home healthy.

Spartanburg is legit. There offense will put up points and make big plays. The QB will be tough to bring down in the open field and can make the throws. He wasn’t as accurate as I would expect from a top recruit like him and they had some drops. They will be more than adequate when the season gets going. Their defensive front will create some problems, but won’t have to pitch shutouts to win games.

Northwestern is younger than I might have thought. This scrimmage was a great live fire experience for them on both offense and defense. Don’t confuse young with lacking talent. If you are going to get the Trojans, you better get them early. The o-line will be ready to go when Friday night lands. Tons of talent on offense to make plays. Since the coach hasn’t named the QB, I won’t either. I will say he was accurate for the most part and completed about 75% of his attempts. Was late a few times, but overall they will be fine at the QB spot. Defensively, the secondary is young but very athletic and when the senior linebacker comes back in a couple weeks they will be very tough upfront. Not that they were bad yesterday.

I’m looking forward to the growth we will see this Friday when Northwestern hosts Dutch Fork in the WRHI Classic (jamboree). Playing Spartanburg and DF this week will definitely prepare the guys for Rock Hill in week 0.

I attended the scrimmage yesterday and both teams looked fairly good. Spartanburg has a lot of playmakers but there were a lot of drops. With the tough non-region schedule they have that need to stop. Northwestern may be young but they have a lot fight in them. I was impressed with the QB play from #10, he was pretty accurate. The WR #7 will be a handful for any team. For Spartanburg to make a run this year, they will have to keep #1 Raheim Jeter healthy. There is a big drop off between him and the backup QB who played yesterday.

I agree with your assessment. Both teams have a chance to be really good. Super glad we didn’t have to tackle Jeter in the open field. He has to stay healthy. The preseason (non-region) games will be important for both teams. They don’t have to win all of those games, but stay healthy and mature before the region season starts.
