Not sure why everyone has to dance around the subject that the Byrnes QB is the coach's son. It wasn't controversial when Bentley was there.

When Chase and Shuler were at Byrnes, they would have been the starting QB no matter who their daddy was!

First off, and most importantly, let me say this: I personally don't know if the back up QB should be the starter or not, I don't see them every day at practice to compare them side by side. Now, I do see them on the field on Friday (and this past week on Thursday) and I do believe that there have been times when the back up should have been brought in if nothing else to see if there is a spark or just to motivate the starter to get it together!

Correct on the Bentley's. They were the best QBs on the team, didn't matter who the coach was. I'm not so sure that's the case this time.

Yeah I get that Bentley’s kids weren’t controversial because of their level of talent and the faith fans had in them.

Who were the backups behind them? Just curious if anyone remembers their names. Surely Bentley gave them a few snaps to see what was there?

Shaw has given the backup some snaps but I don’t remember him getting a chance to sling the ball around. Seems like I saw #1 get the nod in a goal line situation Thursday night.

If I were Shaw I’d at least see if #1 can throw a fade to the corner.

Still at 5-1 with the only loss being to the Vikes it seems like the starter has earned his gig. His backup might be better, I dunno. If he was that much better then Id have expected him to get more snaps also when he was at Dorman.

Not sure how much playing time the backup got in the first five games but he got some snaps against the Vikes in a game the Rebs were behind in and weren’t necessarily picked to win anyway.

So how often do coaches. with their son as the starting QB, bench the starter and call in the backup?

I would think it would be a difficult decision. Not sure I’ve seen many starters who weren’t related to the coach get yanked mid season after losing their first game to a team that had been ranked higher than them in every poll all year long.

I guess you folks have been seeing some badly thrown balls all year. If he’d been dominating all year long, one game shouldn’t shake your faith or cause uncertainty.

All the leading comments and posts eluding to controversy behind the scenes seems unnecessary if discussed in a mature fashion. Other fans around the state might like to know the nature and source of doubt.

It sounded like something more nefarious than the QB being related to the coach. Everyone hinting that Byrnes is back to their old ways sounds like somewhat of an endorsement for the starter.

Anyone got any stats on their run/pass ratio this year?

I’ve heard that Byrnes should be running more this year which means they’re throwing it around this season.

I’ve only seen Byrnes once this year. But yeah, it seemed like his accuracy was a little off at times. Still, it’s not like Byrnes was dismantled this past week.

I remember a game that Byrnes was running the score up on a team & Bentley wouldn't bench Shuler.
His "record setting" stats are definitely PADDED!

Are you forgetting the loss to West Florence? Listen, pulling a QB is a difficult decision and when you add in that it is your son, it has to be a horrible decision to be faced with...

I have stated above and I say it again, I do not know if it is the correct decision or not. However, putting the back up in for a series when he is struggling can be two-fold. It may be a spark to a sputtering offense and it could be a "WAKE UP" call to the starter. Coaches do it every where on a regular basis.

Honestly, he was solid his first 3 games, but since Greer took away the deep ball and required him to make the underneath throws he’s be exposed. The last three games have not been great.

I think that is an over reach saying he is the whole team. The Cooke brothers, a stable of good running backs.

Don't forget, he also got a HUGE and costly personal foul penalty that kept a drive going when it would have been 4th down... that was a total lack of discipline!

He is and will continue to be a huge contributor as long as he stays healthy! He has a lot of talent and a tremendous amount of potential.... but he has to learn to play without making those huge penalties and stop the self promoting actions because those penalties hurt a team! As he grows in physical size, if he also matures and continues to learn to play the position and develop his talents and techniques; the sky is the limit for him!
