Greg Porter
Re: Greg Porter
Porter would leave for a job outside of Greenville County, and seems he has applied for every decent job in the state over the years. Nothing wrong with that, as most know that the folks in the district office in GC seem to care less about football under the current leadership, and support for football, including pay and stipends, is not exactly supporting football to play at a level with the better teams in the state. But that being said, he does have by far the best job in Greenville County. Greenville High seemed to decide years ago that they would take their football program under their own wing and provide the support that they cannot count on from the district, and that the administrators at most other GC schools don’t care about pursuing. As far as recruiting? Sure he does. But it is legal. Shame on the other coaches in the county that don’t do they same, or watch the lower age groups closer to keep their talent at home.

Stipends..... it's not true that GC doesn't pay well... They don't pay as well as the top districts, but there are a LOT of HCs in SC that would take what Porter makes. GC may be middle of the pack, but they are far from the worst. Same with GC AC's.Deputy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 7:01 pmPorter would leave for a job outside of Greenville County, and seems he has applied for every decent job in the state over the years. The problem with GC is unless you have a community like Greer or Augusta Rd area that will kick in alumni money, the district has to prop up the Berea's, Southsides's, etc..... with equitable resources.
That's equity for you.
And when you mention the administrators.... you'd be surprised at how little the admins in the 'best' district care about the football team. The HFBC doesn't do anytihing to get the principal his next promotion.... he might PREVENT the principal from getting that promotion, but he doesn't help.
And YES there are admins that go to the post for the football team.... I know, I know. But when Mr./Mrs. Principal wants to take that next step, NONE of the interviewers call the HFBC and ask if he helped the football team get in the playoffs.
The administrative problem in GC could have been solved 25 years ago when there was a referendum to split the county into 4 separate districts and it failed..... every stake holder was fighting over what they had/didn't have instead of realizing smaller governance would have made all parties better off regardless of the tax base.
It ain't the athletics stake holders, it's the career political grievance pushers that are holding GC back.
That and the career bureaucrats that don't want to lose their little fiefdoms in the DO on 301 East Camperdown Way.
Porter has painted himself in a corner and probably can't get out. There have been prime jobs he has put in for and if he hasn't escaped GC yet, he probably never will. He is basically a good guy that has..... made his choices, and will have to live with them.
He might as well dig in and become one of the GC problems....

Re: Greg Porter
How good is Coach Porter. I would be interested in how many of his players that sign to college start at Greenville? How many played football at Greenville in 9th grade? Wonder the same about, when he was at Hillcrest, how many that went on to play college were at Hillcrest in the 9th grade? I'm sure there are people that will get upset, but I'm just curious.

Bringthewood…… you are correct that GC isn’t the worst paying district in the state. But I never said they were. But that they don’t pay nearly as well as the top districts, and combined with the paltry budget support from Camperdown way, says all one needs to know about the lack of desire to try to make their football programs competitive at a high level. To underscore this I know a coordinator that a certain GC tam reached out to in regards to their head coaching vacancy. He makes as much as a coordinator in Lexington zone as the HC pay is at this school. Pretty sad.

Porter winning a state title @Hillcrest (5A) may be something never done again ( at least ) in our lifetime
So that along he gets nothing but the upmost respect from me! If he stays , Greenville should be favorites for 4a this year with all the talent!

Re: Greg Porter
But when he won it at Hillcrest did he not have a Greenville county All Star Team? Was it not players from every other school in Greenville county? Would be curious if that makes him the man, how many of those players on that team, played at Hillcrest in the 9th grade? I don't know but I know it is rumored that he has like 25 transfers in on his team now... That would probably be an exaggeration, but even if that is close, does that make him the best coach or like Saban and Smart, the best collectors of talent? But unlike them he still can not win a state championship (except the one year at Hillcrest).

Re: Greg Porter
Regardless of Porter, GC has set up this as their modus operandi .... Students can choose to go to whatever school they want in Gville County. If a kid in Travelers Rest wants to go to Mann for its science/tech programs, then they can. If a kid from Berea wants to go the Gville Early College, they can. If a kid from Fountain Inn wants to go the IB program at Southside, they can. ..... and on and on. It is how GC politicians have set up its attendance so they can create these magnet schools.DawgBulleyes wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 2:08 pmBut when he won it at Hillcrest did he not have a Greenville county All Star Team? Porter is just working within the parameters that the politicians at the DO has set up. Everyone else is that not trying to do the same thing in GC is not trying.
If you boss gives you a short cut to success/promotion; would you take it?
