Things have changed a lot at Emerald.
You're right, just not for the better. The football program is worse.
Geez Sounds like you are little upset with Tad. But if think you can change the culture at the school overnight you are sadly mistaken. It will start at the middle school, rec league level. From what I've seen Emerald lost a few bad apples but also made more men out of more players. That's all programs in these days and times. People complain all the time instead of supporting a different movement. Emerald has never had a superior athletic program in a while. No one's to blame it just haven't been. It may be all about wins and losses to you but the difference to me is the fight those kids have. The attitude to try to win is very different at Emerald in 2023 than 5yrs ago.

Not sure No Fly Zone will ever be happy with anyone at Emerald. No one is perfect, everyone has thier flaws. I think Tad has done a good job with Emerald, especially when it was in a tough stop when he got there, in terms of culture.

You may be right, but they've certainly had the right candidates ready to go a few times and passed on them or ran them off before it became open.

What do you know about the culture there before Dubose took over? That's an open question to anybody that's made that kind of assumption.

I don't see multiple playoff runs and Power 5 full scholarship offers at Emerald lately. I've been as critical of McMahon as I can be, but kids came out to play for him and his staff at one point. The wheels fell off there when certain assistants left.

My main criticism of Dubose so far is the makeup of his staff. I have zero qualms with him as a defensive coordinator and as a man. I think he's great at both. But his staff is paper thin.

I'm not upset with Tad. I'm upset with the results.

Emerald is not Abbeville.

That's always the standard for you guys. It can't be done in most towns and it can't be done in Greenwood.

Please elaborate why it can't be done in Greenwood. Same demographics, more resources, the same building blocks are used in high school for years. Abbeville didn't change until the Rec league was taken seriously. Now you can look back at the years of Rec ball. Legendary Rec league coaches Terrance "Tanko" Rayford and Ellis "Bebe" Belton are assistants at abbeville now. Mike Bolden is the Head Coach at the Wright Middle. Those are the building blocks of your program. I can promise you this Jamie Nickles will tell you off top the community is abbeville football. You already assumed it won't work so obviously it's a lack of support in Greenwood county.

Greenwood has two high schools. You don’t have the same type of opportunity to build rec and middle school feeder programs when it’s split like that.

It works in Abbeville because all the kids come up and go to the same school.

There are 3 high schools in the county.... CF has chosen to go charter, but Dixie is still solidly a stand alone school.

I've said so many times on PrepTalk show me your Rec league you can see the future. 96, Ware Shoals, and Greenwood Rec been down for years look at the current situation. Greenwood Rec league is in trouble because they wanted to start all of these AAU football but ain't teaching fundamentals to kids. Everyone gotta be on the same page. All the coaches wanna be Andy Reid instead of coming together for the Greater Good of Football.

Could this have anything to do with the dominance of Abbeville football compared to the other teams in their region.
student break down by race. Landrum 89% white 3% black. Blacksburg 86% white 12% black. Liberty 85 % white 4% black.
Chesnee 82 % white 8 % black. Ninety Six 76 % white 19% black. Abbeville 48 % white 47 % black .

Dubose is the guy to right Emerald. Don't forget how the district carved out Emerald when it 1st became a high school. The whole Abbeville rec league debate is moot. If you think you have good rec league, then schedule a game or two with Abbeville. Then you'll know. Those kids play on a whole different level. They live hard and play hard. Just go to a game and watch how an eight year old kid from Abbeville will strike another player.

You won't see that same aggression from an eight year old from Greenville, Spartanburg, or Columbia. Those kids will get after your arse.

That can't be taught in high school.

If the community will buy into what Dubose has to offer, then everyone will reap from the sowing.

Trouble is Greenwood as a whole is a cesspit of drugs and gangs. There is plenty of those that wish they were the level of the Self family, but things are most are just a generation or so from mill hill lint heads. So the divide stays the same, unfortunately. Then you have the DamYankees that have dropped in b/c of Lander.....

Greenwood is about half a step removed from what happened to Union county. The fact the Self foundation and the hospital is still in tact is the reason that the area is holding the area together, and the fact the lake isn't a Core of Engineers project helps also.

Most should be happy were they are and it isn't worse. Look at similar rural SC towns and be glad you have what is there.

The fact the Hwy 72/Old Greenwood mall area has grown as much as it has is a blessing. And a lot that westside 72 growth is because the good folks of Abbeville driving down the road to go out to eat and shop. The same can't be said for the 96 side of Greenwood.

Is the old Walmart and Lowe's still empty? On Cambridge Avenue, literally there is a 'right' and 'wrong' side of the tracks. How many shooting happen between Seaboard and Creswell Avenue? Would you drop off your 12 year old at the mall for a couple of hours to hang out?

Greenwood can't just keep whistling through the graveyard and expect things will improve.
