There’s a real chance Emerald goes winless this year

It’s not just GHS, it’s the whole city. There is a gang problem and it’s keeping some of the best athletes in the state on the street.

Both Liner and Dubose are great men, but they have proven so far that they cannot fix the culture.

Eventually the schools will be combined and then they’ll have a shot again. It’s the only way to be consistently competitive in sports.

Right now, they can’t fill in the gaps that the gang scene has created. And there’s no one in either program that is willing to do anything about it.
First of all, I'm not a Greenwood guy so I know very little about the current state of GREENWOOD (the town, not the school) so I found one statement really interesting to me... Is that something that would be welcomed or hated by the general public?

I'm thinking about entering the transfer portal!

Just trying to see things objectively. Other schools are growing faster, in metro areas, have more to choose from or the ability to recruit. Perhaps lots of kids still roaming the halls or streets. Back in the days you were almost like a celebrity in school just for being on the team. Greenwood was a school where at least the region title was pretty much automatic. Now can't hardly even win that. Have great facilities, but just can't seem to put all of the pieces together. I guess I'm finally accepting that this might just be the new norm. Average at best. Well. I guess at least we gave some titles. Lol.
Yup..... Unfortunately things haven't been the same since Cathcart left. I've personally been holding on to the past far too long and tonight was the last straw. I'm still from Greenwood, Greenwood high School graduate, will always cheer for them to win. Like I said on a previous post Greenwood is in my blood and that will never change. But what I'm not about to do is travel all around the state wasting my gas to watch that type of BS. I'm glad we have a radio station to where I can listen and cheer them on that way. Hate to say it like that. But with my work schedule, social life ect..... I simply have better things to do than to go to a game and watch Greenwood get their brains beat in week in and week out. Kind of sad for a school that has such R
Rich tradition in football in regards to winning. Is what it is though. The current level of our program is no better than the easley's of the world. Hell we might get beat by them too. Who knows. I hope not but wouldn't be surprised.

In regards to the transfer portal, there are really no big jobs in Greenwood like that so no family would want to move there. But more than that coach liner and the ad don't want to win that way anyway. So that's out. And honestly that's about the only way I see Greenwood winning consistently is through the transfer portal which is not an option for us.

So we'll probably have a competitive team that makes a run once every 7 to 10 years.
I'm not calling you out particularly, but you've made a statement that I've seen several times over on this board about Gene Cathcart.

Do you know why he 'left'????? .........

Using him as a reference point for excellence isn't a good one....
I've heard. But that's another subject that's probably not good to talk about here. One thing for sure. He finds success in football with every school he's been too. He has flaws. We all do, but he sure can coach. Lol. That's not to take anything away from the current staff. I believe it's bigger than that now.
So.... that argument is moot.... so a flawed former coach isn't the measurement stick for success?
He is gone. Will probably never step foot back into Greenwood. But I think it's more to it than just coach at this point.

That's not going to happen. There are people in Greenwood that wanted that. People with influence. In all fairness, every championship Greenwood has won since 99 was with Emerald as a high school. Emerald even won one in 98 itself. 99, 2000, 2006, 2012 were all won by Greenwood with there being 2 schools in town.

If anyone is expecting 2 football coaches to 'fix the culture' of Greenwood, then there are bigger problems than the community issue.

And it is a community issue, not a football program issue. I've heard this time and time again. Yet no one will address the larger problem and no one is willing to talk about the real heart of the community's problem. The band-aids will continue to be placed on it.

It is sad that there are no community 'leaders' that will step up and address the real problem and call it for what it is. Too many cowards...

I once lived there and thought is was a place to raise a family....... then I left and took my family on.

The coaches are not out in the community. That is an issue.

There is nothing the coaches will do to fix the 'community issue".

Correct, there’s nothing they WILL do because they can’t relate to that part of the community that’s struggling.

There are certainly things that can be done, but it will take time to repair.

I can agree some with there being problems in the community. But on that same token Greemwood issues as far as crime etc are not worse than Anderson. There 2 schools are actually playing better football than they did years ago. And I know personally that Liner has gotten out into the community and tried to help and get kids to participate. He actually grew up some of youth in those troubled areas and knows people in those areas. He is trying. But it takes more than just him.

He could be doing more than I think, but I guarantee you Liner isn’t down in the Garden

I know of one coach that had players charged with several crimes and said publicly that as long as his players don't commit a felony they can play football and they did play.
