WEEK FIVE RESULTS:
Byrnes completely dominated West Florence all night, all over the field, where I expected a little bit of a game
Spartanburg had zero trouble with Mauldin, as expected.
Gaffney had a basketball game at Fort Dorchester, what? That was a football game? Oh, I thought with that score it had to be a basketball game.... so was it that they have such explosive offenses or is it that neither defense could stop anything?
Dorman lost a shoot out at River Bluff
Clover beat Boiling Springs by 36-21 score.
Dorman and Boiling Springs are good, solid football teams and while I am not counting them out; it is hard to not focus on the other three teams at this point in time. So, I'm looking at the schedule and each of them gets one home and one road game against each other. The Vikings and the Rebels get first opportunity to become the leader of the pack. Nixon Field should be rocking Friday Night as the Vikings come to town.
9/29 Spartanburg AT Byrnes
10/6 Gaffney AT Spartanburg
10/27 Byrnes AT Gaffney
So let's look at the first match up that seems to be the KEY:
9/29 Spartanburg AT Byrnes
If the Rebels offense can play like they did last night, in what was by far the best that unit has played all season, and the defense continues to look like they have ALL season; I like the odds that this will be a great game. I could do my best Lou Holtz impression and say: "I hope we can stay withing two TD's of the Vikings" or I could be like the sportscasters on the PLAY BY PLAY on the weekends... "This one could come down to the last team with the ball!" But I think I'm going to just be REBEL-FAN-74 and say: All the above is true, both teams are great teams and could play in Orangeburg that first weekend in December. Talent all over the place and I think it comes down to these factors:
....1... Which team makes the fewest mistakes. You cannot afford to give the other team a short field or a cheap score. Make them earn everything, all night.
....2... Game Plan. Be prepared and make adjustments as needed.
....3... Execute. Yes it is a big game, but do not be too excited.
Whichever team can do those things will likely be the "TEAM TO BEAT" after Week One of Region Play! But that means very little because you still have several tough ones remaining on the schedule and I think this Region is in the discussion for the toughest Region Top to Bottom again this year. I could see the fifth team getting the At Larger berth in the 5A bracket facing a trip to face the eventual Region II Champion (unless the selection committee doesn't want a rematch game in the playoffs).
So, which one of these teams will it be, you ask...... SPOILER ALERT!!!! I still have Rebel Rouser playing in head, so BYRNES

Re: REGION II AAAAA (Weekly breakdown)
Like I said before Spartanburg made a lot of mistakes in that game
along with penalties. If they had played like they did against Grayson it would have been lights out like last year.It doesn’t matter who you play like Bynes lost to champan.Mistakes can cost you a game when your expected to win..

Re: REGION II AAAAA (Weekly breakdown)
Week Six recap:
For the first GAME OF THE YEAR for Region II, it was all we expected and it came down to the big play late in the 4th quarter with a PICK SIX by the Rebels to seal the game.
Byrnes, by most accounts is the leader of the pack for now with another GAME OF THE YEAR coming next week as the Indians take the 15 or 16 mile road trip to the Eastside of Spartanburg to face the Vikings. I haven't seen the predictions from Doodles yet, but I'd expect it to be the Vikings by a point or two by virtue of being at home. As for me, I think the extra week to prepare may be worth the difference of home field advantage. Doodles may have it as a PICK 'EM game. The Vikings need to bounce back or face the possibility of no home games in the playoffs!
The Rebels travel to Boiling Springs to face the Bulldogs who seem "so close" but always seem to come up a play or two short this season. The Rebels cannot afford to take them for granted and need to come out firing on all cylinders and get that offense going. They started off running the ball fairly well, but after the Vikings sold out to stop the run, the offense for the Rebels was lukewarm at best. Give credit to the Vikings for making the adjustments; but the Rebels have to be able to adjust as well. I expect the Dogs will be looking to catch the Rebels still a mile high over the big win and not quite focused on them and look to score early and keep the fans in the game. I think the Rebels have learned that taking the other team for granted is pure poison and will come out focused and do their best to put this game away as quickly as possible.
PREDICTIONS:
Byrnes .......... 2 - 0
Dorman ........ 1 - 0
Spartanburg .. 1 - 1
Gaffney ......... 0 - 1
B. Springs ..... 0 - 2
