Not trying to stir the pot, but how does everyone feel about the SC Dept. of Ed possibly taking over the SCHSL? I know that anytime someone discusses the SCHSL, it is a polarizing topic. And my belief is that it would be a complete train wreck if it happens. If they don’t hire people with a background in HS and even MS Athletics, they won’t have a clue about anything.
Anything the state department does is not in the best interest of students period. Also, where do you think most of those beurocrats kids go? It sure ain't Columbia High School. We will see even more leaning towards private and charter
Exactly, the new charter school in Lexington was able to get the League’s Appellate committee to allow them to be considered in a different attendance zone rather than the one the school is actually located in. It makes zero sense in my opinion. They claimed that they are not like Gray Collegiate, but appealing to the league to get into another attendance zone sure seems like they are trying to get a competitive advantage so they won’t get hit by the multiplier.

Dept of Education taking over athletics would be a train wreck. We have a lot to fix, but the idea that the government is the right entity to do it is comical. The push from the state legislature is already clearly swaying towards charter/school choice anyways.

HSL should start enforcing recruitment violations or take it out of the rules completely, but this whole sit on their hands and pretend they don’t see it just hurts everyone who wants to play by the rules!

I'm not a huge fan of the HSL, but Jerome has stated time and time again they enforce what the member schools want....... Just go back a hot minute to the Melton transfer challenge.... it came from the school and their lawyers vs the HSL.

Any institution will only fight so many law suits before it either just settles everything or changes policy. All the times the HSL tried to enforce transfer rules, it got sued by the school that was benefitting from the transfer.

The biggest part of the blame goes to the member schools.

You want to be mad at the charter/private/etc... schools? Well you better be mad you YOUR school for allowing them to join the HSL. Your AD/Principal could have voted to not allow them to join.

Not how it works.. AD/Principals do not vote on new members, the executive committee does and when they deny the new charter schools at times they just appeal to the appellate committee who's just is just to enforce the by laws so they get accepted. The can of worms was opened long long ago. Teams like Bishop England set a precedent that had no impact back then.

Exactly, it was the Appellate Panel that has given the charter schools what they want. A charter school should not be able to switch school attendance zones. I really believe that school will struggle at everything they do. If my team played them, I would beat them as bad as I could. But honestly, I believe kids going to the new charter school in Lexington are not the most athletic at all. I know that there will be outliers that can really play, but let’s be honest, Storm Thurmond should beat them by 70 in football and 50+ in basketball.

Charter schools cannot be denied admission to the HSL becuase they are public schools. Its state law. Executive committee can grandstand and deny them admission, but it is just for show. All the charter has to do is file for an injunction and they are in. The issue we have is the legislature and the provisos they put in the state budget. Private and charter schools are protected by them. I'm not defending the HSL. They are terrible at their jobs, but the member school's hands are tied on a lot of this stuff by state law
