OK Dub, Stretch...etc...best DWD team ever? I know there were some great teams back in the 90's and the last few years. I am going to give my pick and you guys of course can explain to me how I am wrong. I'm going with the 2020 Covid Team. Yes, I know that was a shortened season and a full season may have came with additional injuries and issues that they did not have to face, but conversely they had to go 10-0 through the uncertain times and all the rigmarole that came with the Covid season restrictions etc. Think they were a talented and resilient group.
OK D. Wistar fans, tell me how I am wrong!...haha. But 2020 is my pick and I am sticking with it.

It’s the 91 team and not close. 15-0 that year .DFOLDMAN wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 2024 9:21 amOK Dub, Stretch...etc...best DWD team ever? Never trailed one second. Didn’t give up a point in the first or fourth quarter that year. Beat NAugusta who was in the state title game the year before like a rented mule. Beat Laurens 21-7 on the road that year. Laurens went on to win the 4A div2 title that year. Beat Greer twice by 3 scores on the road. Not close . Greer was two years from a state title and had a 19 game winning streak going the year prior that Daniel also broke. Beat Seneca on the road 28-0 . Seneca was 9-0 at the time and were one of the best if not the best Seneca team I’d ever seen. Even Tom Bass said so.
Daniel starting 5 oline was the 3rd biggest line in the state that year behind Clemson and USC. Averaged above 300 lbs and that was a center that weighs 250. All 5 guys went to college on football scholarship. On top of that the best qb ever at Daniel played that year in Shawn Young. Unbelievable talent and was getting offers but never had the grades. Had something like 17 guys that went on to play college ball. Plus led by Allen Sitterle who was one of the best I’ve ever seen. The real mind blower is that there was only 36 players on that team. But like Sitterle said after N Augusta sent 90 players out for the coin toss. You can only play 11 at a time.

I knew the 91 team was good....I just had to hand to the 2020 team and all the "stuff" kids had to deal with that season. They had 4/5 games canceled on them at the last minute due to “covid”. It was curious to me though that almost no teams canceled their games once the playoffs started. The only team I recall was Oceanside in the 2nd or 3rd round. Camden got a bye that week. Eventually losing to Daniel in the title game.
That’s being said the 91 team beats them by 2/3 scores.

I don't know, Dub. Folks talk about teams from back in the day beating good recent teams- just don't see it. Kids now are bigger, stronger, faster, better prepared, much more complex offensive and defensive schemes. Better kickers and punters... I watched some of the very best Summerville teams of the mid 1980s play and even the 5-5 Dutch Fork team from last year would have drug them handily.
You are sounding like an Old Boomer like me, Dub!...hahaha.

I have seen a lot of good offensive line play in my time, but I truly miss seeing the line play that Sitterle produced. Haven’t seen a line before, or since, that came off the ball like his did.

91’ is the right answer. But 2013 was the most talented pound for pound just couldn’t get it done. Lost in state title to Myrtle Beach. Had 18 seniors sign that year, 10/11 go to college on defense and Jaelon Oglesby to top it off at RB. Team was untouchable and blew it. Doesn’t help that the ran antiquated offense. Who knows what that group could’ve accomplished with the current Daniel scheme. Defense gave up an average of 6 points all year. Talented group. Best team 91, most talented 2013, most explosive and best offense by far 2020, and best senior class was 2024 so far (based on wins).

The best line coach I’ve ever seen. The way his guys would hit before the game was amazing. They would hit for 30 minutes in warmups harder than the game. Opposing coaches would go down and watch and would walk away shaking their heads. I think Tom Bass described it best when he called it an avalanche of humans. I watched countless 10 minute plus drives. Wills of other teams just being taken . One night over at Seneca , maybe 98 or 99 I thought they actually needed to stop the game in the 3rd quarter because I thought someone was going to get hurt real bad. The defensive front couldn’t even get off their knees. They took 3 consecutive time outs on defense. Something I’ve never seen before or since. It was something to behold. That’s why I’m saying that even as great as these teams have been the last 6 years they couldn’t deal with that style of play IF sitterle got up on you and dictated the style of the game it was over.
Re: D. Wistar faithful...and any old Western 3 A foes...
2013 was disappointing but let’s be honest 2008-2014 were wasted teams. Easily should’ve been 3/4 more state championships. The 09 team to me was better than 13. Maybe not as deep. But that team had 3 nfl players on it including Nuk Hopkins. No way they should’ve lost a game. Unfortunately the head coach was not up to par and the offense had zero identity. Misuse of players and undisciplined. Even in 13 when they went to state the upper state championship was almost given away and the misuse of oglesby as a decoy ( the head coaches words not mine) .7timechamps wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2024 6:38 pm91’ is the right answer. Frustrating to even think about.
Thank god Fruster got the job and hired Paige Wofford to stamp a true identity into the Daniel program. Could you imagine Hopkins oglesby Jerome Williams , c j Davidson in this current system.
