It is interesting to me to hear about all the holding calls on Byrnes. As an observation, I can state that those of us at the NW - Byrnes game were very vocal in our displeasure as to the lack of holding penalties called on Byrnes. It seemed like one of our guys was being held or tackled on just about every play. After the game, we pretty well just chalked it up as first game mistakes by the Byrnes's offensive line and loose.....very loose, officiating....making allowances for it being the first game of the year and it was being played in OPPRESSIVE HEAT.
Yet, here we are at the end of the season and this is still an issue.

Re: Byrnes and holding penalty calls
I'm glad to see someone vocal about this, this past fri nite was in my opinion, one of the worst officiated games I believe I've ever seen. Socastee's O Line held us on darn near every play and not a single flag was thrown against them, in fact other than a offsides and a unsportsmanlike conduct, they did not throw a flag against them.
From what I've been told by a co-worker who has inside info, SC had to hire a tremendous amount of new refs this yr. Well... the ones they hired could not pass the test,, so what do they do???? They "dumb down" the test so they could pass it.
I'm sure a lot of coaches and I know fans and parents are getting fed up with all the no calls as well as crappie calls going on all across the state. Player safety should be above everything and I feel like that its not.
Off my soap box for now.

Re: Byrnes and holding penalty calls
Many people I have talked to have said the same thing. The officiating seems to be less consistent, and more "questionable", than in the past. I know that NW got flagged last year for an illegal touch by the qb. Rudolph was in the shotgun and did a finger tip touch timing toss to Hart running through the backfield. Richardson (hc) almost came unglued as it negated a HUGE gain on that play.
I am not trying to turn this thread into a vent about "bad" officiating. The point was meant to be focused more on Byrnes and their offensive line and the amount of holding penalties they seem to be incurring. Point of reference was my personal observations about calls (or the lack thereof) from the first game of the year (NW vs Byrnes) all the way to last week's Dorman vs Byrnes game.......and all the comments related to the number of holding calls.
As a youth league basketball referee for many many years, I don't say too much about the officiating as I have been there, done that, got the scars.
One last side note. As fans, too often we KNOW the rules and KNOW the officials missed the call. Last year, there was a play where NW was flagged for an illegal touch on a semi-trick kick off return. I later found out that the official was spot on with the correct call...which went against NW. Sometimes, we the fans, don't KNOW as much as we think we do. Also, we sometimes forget that the official 5 yards from the play can actually see it better than we can from 50+ yards away in the stands. Angles are everything.

And don't forget that "HOLDING" has been re-defined since most of us were in uniform...trojangrad78 wrote:One last side note. The rules have been liberalized (like most everything has in the USA) to allow more than we were allowed back in the day. Now, as long as the hands are "inside" almost anything is allowed. It is when the offensive lineman moves his arms away from his body that the flags start flying. Grabbing the jersey with your hands still tucked in tight seems to be OK, but once you move your arm to where your elbows are straightened then you will get called. It would seem to me, as a DL, the thing to do is attack and then fall back and the OL will get called because once he is engaged and you can pull his arms straight, he is guilty of holding.

And that what a lot of guys are starting to do around here, and we're getting the call.Rebel-Fan-74 wrote: It would seem to me, as a DL, the thing to do is attack and then fall back and the OL will get called because once he is engaged and you can pull his arms straight, he is guilty of holding.
