PLAYER making the NFL has nothing to do with how good or bad his High School team is or was. A J Green was a great talent and even if he were playing for Summerville today, he would still be getting a four year scholarship to several schools and would be drafted and playing in the NFL.
High School teams can be carried by one player to some extent, but not like a basketball team. Marcus, as great as he was at Byrnes, was not the only player who took that team to the next level. Now, anyone could see he carried a large portion of the load, but we had many players on those teams who were great HIGH SCHOOL players. Many of them played college football, some at Division I, some at Division III. The word that seems to be missing from the discussion is TEAM. The Rebels from 2000-2013 were TEAM focused, not "ride this guy" focused.
The 2005 team in my mind was one of the best teams during that run and outside the Rebel faithful, many couldn't even name the key players on the team....

I agree 110%. When we played Byrnes for the State Championship in 2009, we beat a team with 2 TOP DIV I recruits, maybe more...in Chas Dodd and Marcus Lattimore. It is a TEAM sport. Right, and its a total team effort across the board. That is the point I was trying to make, while Fort Dorchester might have had 3 NFL players over the last 10 years, Byrnes and NW have had overall much better talent year in and year out across the board. You can throw Dorman into that mix as well.Sibilance wrote:I agree 110%. Re: OTS Sports Network Statewide Poll: Week 9
The point I'm making is that there is a reason both Byrnes and Northwestern have been so successful over the past decade plus in this state, and it isn't an eternal spring of amazing players. I can tell you before a game is even played in a high school football season that teams like Byrnes, Northwestern, Dorman, ect. are going to be above average and successful. By the same token I could also tell you what teams will be below average or unsuccessful too. Sure there are surprise teams like Hillcrest last year, but for the most part there are traditional powers over this state in high school football. Byrnes is an amazing program, I'm jealous of their accomplishments...when was the last time they were not a threat to win the state championship? Every year they field a team that has a legitimate shot to win the championship...look at Wando the largest school in the state, every year they field a team that is barely competitive in region play and when was the last time Wando ever fielded a legitimate state contender? Does this mean that kids born in Duncan over the past almost 20 years are all the best football players in the state, and all the kids born in Mount Pleasant the past almost 20 years are not that good at football? You look at a team like Goose Creek before Chuck Reedy came in...0-11 seasons, homecoming fodder and pretty much bottom of the barrel in terms of high school football teams. A few years after Reedy is there and they are state champs, have shrine bowl players, division 1 prospects and are nationally ranked. Was that just a coincidence? When a team is successful they get more recognition and in turn more players get noticed for D1 scholarships and awards and honors like the Shrine Bowl. I'm not saying those players are bad, but I am saying that a great player on an average team in Charleston has less of a chance of receiving those type of honors than a great player on a team like Byrnes of Northwestern. Carlos Dunlap from Fort was completely snubbed of a Shrine Bowl selection (even though Rivals had him as the #1 player in the state above Willy Korn)...he went on to win a national championship at Florida (being the defensive MVP in the national championship game) 2nd round selection by the Bengals and currently is leading the NFL in sacks. If the Shrine Bowl doesn't offer a spot to the #1 player in the state who goes on to be successful in Div 1 college AND the NFL then I'm sorry but I'm not gonna use those selections as my basis for evaluating talent.
I honestly don't think Byrnes or Northwestern over the past 20 years have any more overall football talent than any other school of equivalent size in the country. They will will have a great talent every so often just like every school does, but their success year after year isn't because they just have better players year after year. There isn't something in the water, there is something in the coaching staff. My original quote of you was because you threw this blanket statement that Fort had no chance against the big boys because "they have better players", and I still don't see how that is at all true. Over the past 20 or so years Fort Dorchester (and the lowcountry) has produced some of the best football players in the state. Over that same time frame Byrnes and Northwestern (and the upstate) have produced some of the best football teams in the state. That's not to say that the upstate hasn't had great players, and it's not to say the lowcountry hasn't had some great teams...but I do think it's worth mentioning that just because the upstate has better teams it doesn't mean they have better players. Byrnes has won how many championships in the past 15 years...8? Fort hasn't even gotten past the 3rd round of the playoffs....but again turn on the NFL this sunday, how many Byrnes players will you see playing? How many Fort players will you see playing?
Again...if Fort plays Byrnes and I have to bet on it...my heart goes with Fort but my brain (and my money) goes with Byrnes. They have earned that respect with their success. But I'm not picking Byrnes to win that game because I think Byrnes has better players than Fort.

While I appreciate your explanation and your opinion, but yes, Byrnes, NW, Dorman (overall) has better players. Sure, the Fort has 3 NFL players, but outside of that, I don't remember them producing 4-5 or 6-7 D-I type prospects each year. As for Dunlap's senior year, pretty sure he was hurt most of the year so he wasn't overlooked, he just wasn't one of the best that season (Probably because of his injury), so the Shrine Bowl did not overlook or snub him because of his school. As for college scholarships, if a player has "it" he has "it". Stats mean zero anymore to college coaches. With media and technology how it is now, College coaches will find the best players. You don't have to play at a great program for that to happen. Now, with that said, kids can develop into better players by going to better schools and therefore drawing scholarship offers.dfactor26 wrote:The point I'm making is that there is a reason both Byrnes and Northwestern have been so successful over the past decade plus in this state, and it isn't an eternal spring of amazing players. I will argue your point about players in Duncan not being better than those in Mt Pleasant. In Duncan, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, etc, they are better because at the lowest levels of football, the kids want to play football. In Mt. Pleasant, for example, that isn't the case. The feeder programs aren't set-up the same. So by the time the kids get to Byrnes, NW, Dorman, Gaffney, Spartanburg, South Pointe, etc, etc, the kids are better football players than their counterparts in the lowcountry. Sure, by shear numbers, Wando and Fort D SHOULD be able to have the same talent, but the kids aren't developed at the lower levels like in other parts. Go position by position and tell me where Fort D is better than Byrnes or NW, this season, or any season. I would be willing to be that most years those two schools will enjoy overall better talent over Fort D.
As for Reedy, any successful program recruits itself and you know, just like I do, that Reedy did a GREAT job of "recruiting" kids in the area. It is no longer a big deal or is it hard to move into a certain school zone. Kids naturally wanted to play for GC due to his coaching pedigree, so in turn, Goose Creek did indeed get the better players.
As for the point of your post, I didn't say the ONLY reason they would beat Fort D was due to better players..I also said better coaching and more battled tested. Yes, Overall, Byrnes and NW have better players than Fort D. Fort D might enjoy one or two top ranked players, but overall position by position, NW and Byrnes are better year in and year out. Also, the coaches are better coaches, and they play tougher schedules.
Again, I stress if Fort D's players are so much better than NW or Byrnes, as you have previously noted, then the entire Fort D coaching staff should be fired and you guys will be easily be able to hire any coach in the state or country for that matter. If you TRULY have much better football players than Byrnes or NW (as you have said in previous posts), honestly ANY coach would want to come there. Who wouldn't want to live in the Charleston area and coach a team full of football players that are better than two teams who have played in 11 state championship games and won 6 state titles in the past 10 years?

You are thinking of Maxwell who was hurt his senior year, Dunlap was healthy his senior year (16 sacks, 104 tackles including 34 for a loss). Wasn't one of the best that year?? He was the #1 player in the state according to Rivals over Willy Korn and the #7 player in a nation his senior year (again according to Rivals). He was absolutely snubbed of the Shrine Bowl, and it was a big deal (around here). Byrnes and Northwestern might have 5-7 D1 prospects ever year, but how many actually pan out? I'm really happy those kids got to go to school and play football, and I'm sure they are successful at whatever they are doing...but again, how many panned out in football? All I said from the start was that Northwestern/Byrnes haven't put out anything close to the talent to come out of Fort Dorchester. How am I wrong? Name one player to come out of Byrnes/Northwestern the past 10 years that has equaled the success of Robert Quinn, Byron Maxwell and Carlos Dunlap. Marcus Lattimore, I can give you that. Ok so in 10 years between Northwestern/Byrnes you guys have had 7 state championships, 25 Shrine Bowl players and dozens of D1 recruits and the best you have to show for it is a player who had a very good freshman season at Carolina but was then plagued by injuries and is now retired from the NFL? So back to my original statement...Byrnes/Northwestern haven't put out anything close to what Fort D has been able to put out in the past decade. I mean Dunlap and Quinn played on the same defensive line one year, how many Byrnes or Northwestern teams have had 2 future NFL stars playing on the same defense? (for the record, that Fort team with Dunlap and Quinn both on defense finished 9-4,3rd in the region, and lost in the 2nd round) Obviously Byrnes/Northwestern have had a tremendous amount of success on a team level, and for the program to send that many kids to college is fantastic...but Fort has put out better players over the past decade than Byrnes/Northwestern have and that is a fact. It's also a fact that Byrnes/Northwestern annually put out better football teams than Fort has ever fielded in the school's history...there is no denying that, and while Fort is 9-0 and having it's best season ever is still understandably and deservedly ranked below Byrnes and Northwestern. But I will say this years Fort team is still just as talented as it has been in the past decade, a player on the U.S. Army All-American team and one of the top sophomore QB's in the country.

Guys, all I got to say now...
I LOVE IT!!!! FOOTBALL TALK LIVES!!!!
Great points, and points that can be debated and discussed without mud slinging and threats... I have to agree on one point about Shrine Bowl Selection... I think that is about as political as the polls, and I wouldn't use that to bolster any point.
I still say that a Byrnes at Fort D is a match up I'd drive to Summerville to see. I'd make GoBigGreen take me to Perfectly Franks before the game, then stay over and go to Page's Fried Okra Grill on Saturday before heading back to the upstate.

Re: OTS Sports Network Statewide Poll: Week 9
Gotcha about Dunlap, my mistake. I think we need to see what your definition of "pan out" is in terms of success. If the only definition of panning out for success is making the NFL, then yes Fort Dorchester has produced more NFL talent than NW or Byrnes in the last 10 years. But, above average players in high school can become NFL stars. Plus, you are missing my point, I am talking POSITION BY POSITION Byrnes and NW are better. If you guys had two NFL lineman on one team and STILL only went 9-4, how bad is the rest of the team??? I have never doubted that Fort D has had 3 GREAT players over that same span, but 3 great players doesn't outweigh all of the college athletes that the other schools have had. I did a little bit of research on NW as that is who I know the best from my friend who coaches there: Justin Worley (Shrine Bowl, South Carolina's only National Gatorade player of the year)-started for 2 seasons for Tennessee, Mason Rudolph (Shrine Bowl, Mr football finalist)-currently in his 2nd year as starting quarterback for #19 Oklahoma State, Cordarelle Patterson-All-SEC at Tennessee, 1st round NFL draft pick in 2013, 2013 pro bowl selection, Brandon Williams (Shrine Bowl, 2 year starter at East Carolina), Keon Stowers (2 year starter and team captain at Kansas), Jarrett Neely (3 year starter at Alabama A&M), Will King (2 year starter at Furman), Garrison Gist (current South Carolina back-up fullback), Gerald Dixon Jr (currently in 2nd year as starting DT for South Carolina), Corey Seargent (Starting Safety for East Carolina), Roderick Byers (2nd string defensive tackle Clemson), Collins Mauldin (played 3 years for Clemson), Russel Hubbs (current LB at the Citadel), Reubyn Walker (Linebacker-South Carolina), Stephen Nance (Newberry starting left tackle), Raydonn McCloud (offensive line-Newberry), Jacquavious Mackey (full scholarship from South Carolina but didn't qualify, so currently at Georgia Military), Quadarious Fair (full scholarship from SC State, but didn't qualify, so currently at JC), Dupree Hart (dozens of scholarship offers for football, but accepted a full baseball scholarship). And those are just the few I know of in the past 6 years. I am unfamiliar with NW's individual success prior to that as my contact wasn't there then. I am sure a Byrnes can show their even longer list. I will continue to say, OVERALL, Byrnes and NW have better players than Fort D and if I am wrong then every Fort Dorchester coach should be fired TODAY. But the bottom line is I am not wrong and therefore the Fort D coaches are doing just fine with the OVERALL talent on the team.dfactor26 wrote:FootballFan4343 wrote: While I appreciate your explanation and your opinion, but yes, Byrnes, NW, Dorman (overall) has better players. Again, WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO LIVE IN CHARLESTON AND HAVE THE STATES BEST FOOTBALL PLAYERS????
Your example of 3 NFL players at Fort D versus the continual great players at Byrnes/NW being the criteria for more success would be like the person that says Cal has better overall players than Alabama due to the fact that Aaron Rodgers is the best NFL player currently? Yes, Aaron Rodgers himself might have been a better player than any to come out of Alabama in the last 25 years, but Cal does not have better OVERALL players than Bama.

I never said position by position Fort is better, I said Byrnes/Northwestern haven't put out anything close to what Fort has put out the past decade. Fort Dorchester has always had a reputation of being super talented but not having much success on the field, and they have lived up to that the past decade or so. Again, between Byrnes/Northwestern this past decade you have 7 state championships, 25 Shrine Bowl players and dozens of D1 recruits and players in college - but at the end of the day the most successful players in the state the past decade have come out of Fort Dorchester. The proof is in the pudding, you'll see them on Sunday.

Re: OTS Sports Network Statewide Poll: Week 9
Your example of 3 NFL players at Fort D versus the continual great players at Byrnes/NW being the criteria for more success would be like the person that says Cal has better overall players than Alabama due to the fact that Aaron Rodgers is the best NFL player currently? Yes, Aaron Rodgers himself might have been a better player than any to come out of Alabama in the last 25 years, but Cal does not have better OVERALL players than Bama. Obviously we jsut aren't going to agree on this. I am assuming you are never going to answer my question about how Laprad keeps his job with, what according to you is clearly the best talent in the state, yet can't win at the statewide level.dfactor26 wrote:I never said position by position Fort is better, I said Byrnes/Northwestern haven't put out anything close to what Fort has put out the past decade. But seriously start a FireCoachLaPrad.com website. Obviously he is not a good coach since Fort Dorchester CLEARLY has the best talent in the state over the last decade and all he can manage is one state semi-final appearance.
Hey, just checked the website is available on GoDaddy. Get it before I do, or else I will charge you big dollars to buy it from me.
