Daniel vs Seneca

Post by stretch »

Last night the Lions took on our biggest rival Seneca winning 76-34. First time as a region game since 2015 so there’s a little extra to the rivalry again. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to attend the game but luckily the Seneca administration was streaming the game on youtube and so many who didn’t get a ticket got to watch at home for no cost to them.
Every year since the 2018 game, Daniel has set the new high scoring record in the long-standing rivalry but tonight’s score trumps the 51 and 56 from the past two years with 76 points which ties a school record. There is still an unresolved Quarterback competition but all 3 that are competing looked good last night in the game and going up against Pendleton next week I expect more of the same with the high scoring.

What has happened to the program down at Seneca? They used to be a pretty consistent program that was a threat to most anyone at their level. But the last few years have been far from anything like that. Is something going on down there administration wise, or something else? Being a one school town, one would figure the emotional, or financial, support is there.

For one they have had 5 different head coaches since 2013 and that is a problem when you can’t a keep a coach with the team. However I think Coach Crane will be staying for a while since he is a Seneca native so that issue could be resolved for now. Since they have had a revolving door of coaches come through players do not want to be apart of rebuilding the program and the best players want to win now. Which leads to the biggest problem they face and that is Walhalla. Ever since Padgett Johnson took over at Walhalla he has made them the envy of all the county schools and when Seneca players see their friends at Walhalla wearing nicer jerseys, having more fun, and winning more than at their school they are quick to transfer. 13 of 22 starters on Walhalla should be attending Seneca. When your best players keep leaving its hard to build a winning culture again and it could take some time for Seneca to build back up to being competitive again.
