What about a revised point system?

Post by Rebel-Fan-74 »

Instead of the old points system where it rewarded a "BIG 16" win, this system will reward a win over a team with a winning record. You beat a good team, you get bonus points, you beat a team with a losing record, you still get more points than a loss to a good team.

…………………………….....…………… …… WIN …… LOSS
5A Team With A Winning Record …… 5.00 …… 3.50
5A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 4.00 …… 2.50

4A Team With A Winning Record …… 4.00 …… 2.50
4A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 3.00 …… 1.50

3A Team With A Winning Record …… 3.00 …… 1.50
3A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 2.00 …… 0.50

2A Team With A Winning Record …… 2.00 …… 0.50
2A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 1.00 …… -0.50

1A Team With A Winning Record …… 1.00 …… -0.50
1A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 0.00 …… -1.50

Take the games you played, maybe give one or two games from your non-region games that do not count, unlike the past where you got to pick ANY two games. In this system, you must count all region games win or lose. So, you must count 8 or 9 games, me I prefer the 9 game choice.

TIEBREAKERS:
As always, tiebreaker #1 is head to head for all situations.
If you have three or more teams tied for Region Champ:
Take the points earned in games against each other
Take the points earned in All Region Games
Take the points earned in ALL counting games {the 8 or 9 games}
Take the points earned in ALL Games Played including the mark off games

As of yet, we have not addressed how many teams make the playoffs but I will take a moment to address that issue.

My own feelings, 32 is way too many and 16 is not enough. So I would say the 8 Region Champs are in and have a Bye in week one. The 8 Runner Ups will host the next 8 teams with the highest point totals regardless of what Region they are from. Ties for the seedings are broken in the same matter as above.

Sounds complicated, but it is not really.... Win your Region or finish 2nd and you are in. Finish lower and your schedule with either help or hurt you.

And before anyone asks...

With this season like it is, there is no way to do a "projection" of what the bracket would look like.

Love the concept. I find that I like the 16 team bracket a lot. No cupcakes, no waiting a week to find out who you play. 1-8 seeds are Region Champs. 9-16 are the 8 highest point totals after that. Break ties with Region finish factoring in. A second place team with x amount of points wins over a 3rd place finisher with the same amount of points. Regions have to have a meaning. The SCHSL makes them up, and mandates that every team in one, plays all others in them.

But the concept of a points system for seeding is a much better way to put together a playoff bracket than the current pre-determined ones.

Don't have the slightest issue with it at all. Seems very workable. But why do I doubt that Jerome and his simpleton at the SCHSL would even take the time to consider something that makes a bit of sense?

I agree, it seems workable and needs some testing and tweeking to ensure all works as expected...

Yeah, I'm not waiting on an email from the SCHSL because they don't like something that makes sense #1 and #2 if they did like this, they would just steal it and swear they never saw it because they don't look at sites like this....

However; if they are interested, I'm available for a small retainer to be added to the SCHSL Staff....

I will never be in favor of any points system that awards points for losing even if its to a 5A team with winning record.

However, I’m more than okay with more points for beating teams with winning records.

Never ever understood how anyone ever thought it was a good idea to award points based on losing even if it’s to a great 5A team.

Point system will never happen because they do not want to do the work to find out seedings at the end of the year right before the playoffs. You will also have teams that wont play others in lower classifications there is no benefit at all for a 5A team to play even a good 4A team and especially play anything below that. I am for a point system because the predetermined brackets are awful. Teams earn the right to play at home through what they do in the regular season not based on who's turn it is to host a playoff game this year.

Points system – All Games are counted

Win against anyone with a wining record 2 points
Win against anyone with a losing record 1 point
Lose to anyone in your Classification 0 points
Lose to anyone is a Classification below you -1 point one level below
-2 points two levels below
-3 points three levels below
-4 points four levels below
Win against a team in a higher classification get additional .5 points one level above
1 point two levels above
1.5 points three levels above
2 points four levels above

I wouldn't penalize a team for playing a smaller school and winning. In the first mentioned one point system you get the same points for beating a good 4A team and terrible 5A team. Why schedule that good 4A team with a chance because we all know some of the top teams in the 4A and 3A divisions can compete with most 5A schools. Tie breakers head to head, point differential of common opponents, total points, total points allowed. Something along those lines, I think you still take region record to decide who wins the region and seed the region winners based on points give them a home game.

In that case, you would be better off to schedule all 1A teams and beat them rather than play any good 4A,5A,3A teams.

Why schedule Greenwood and get zero points when you can play Jonesville (don't exist any more so no one can jump on me for using them as an example) and get points.

You are not rewarding them for losing, you are rewarding them for scheduling the tougher opponents. Look at it this way

…………………………….....…………… …… WIN …… LOSS
5A Team With A Winning Record …… 5.00 …… 3.50
5A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 4.00 …… 2.50

You are awarded 2.5 points for scheduling a 5A school because you don't know if that school is going to have a winning record or not when you set up the schedule. If that team doesn't have a winning record and you beat them, you get 1.5 more points for the win. If they end up with a winning record and you lose, you get only get a 1.0 bonus point because you scheduled an above average team. If they end up with a winning record and you beat them, you get 2.5 points.

This point system would be for 5A and 4A possibly... each Division can tweek it as they see fit to fit their division.

1A would likely start with
…………………………….....…………… …… WIN …… LOSS
1A Team With A Winning Record …… 5.00 …… 3.50
1A Team W/non-Winning Record …… 4.00 …… 2.50
.
