Silver Bluff to honor its five title teams this Friday

Post by Beaudiddley »

Silver Bluff players celebrated after the 2001 state championship, one of five Class AA state titles won by the school located in Petticoat Junction.Ben Barfield was in the stands for the first championship.

He was on the field for the second and third.

Through it all – and even beyond – Silver Bluff kept winning.

This Friday, Silver Bluff will honor all five of its state championship teams at the same time for the first time. As part of the halftime ceremony during the game against Calhoun County, each individual member of the title teams will be introduced. Barfield said he expects more than 100 former players and coaches to be in attendance.

The Bulldogs’ championship tradition started with the 1986 squad, the one Barfield watched win when he was in seventh grade. Barfield was later an offensive lineman on the 1990 and 1991 title teams. Silver Bluff also went back to back in 2000 and 2001.

“We just kept going,” Barfield said about his group continuing the winning. “It was just a special time.”

The three head coaches who led Silver Bluff to the five championships are supposed to be at the game: Clayton Chriswell (1981-1988), Butch Jacobs (1989-1992) and Al Lown (1993-present).

Defense has been one common theme through all those years. According to scfootballhistory.com, Silver Bluff allowed just over seven points per game in those five seasons, went a combined 68-4 and posted 19 shutouts.

The 2000 and 2001 teams were particularly special, as they both went 15-0.

Jacobs said he has kept in touch with many of the coaches on his staffs, but Friday should be a night for an even larger
reunion.

“It’s going to be good to see those kids. Most of them I haven’t seen since they graduated high school or I left Silver Bluff,” he said. “And it’s good to see the coaches again – it’s always good to see all those people and old friends.”

That should be a really special environment Friday night. I think that's a great thing for the school to do.
