That makes perfect sense. Welcome to SC 5A, welcome to the tyranny of the majority. :x They just tossed fairness and competitiveness under the bus. No surprise, that bus was beeping when they put the 1600 ADM schools in the top classification.
FootballFan4343 wrote: From my understanding the Region 2 teams, along with Northwestern, Fort Dorchester, Stratford, Summerville, Dutch Fork were the only real ones against the current plan. So basically the teams that feel they have shots at state championships.
Those 32 smaller and/or less competitive teams can now schedule 5 or 6 local and smaller schools. Their (meaningless) overall record improves, gate & concessions revenue increases, travel costs are reduced, and 4/5 of them make the playoffs. All of this makes the boosters and homers happy which makes the coach's and AD's jobs easier and safer.
FootballFan4343 wrote:... what about non-region games. With the preset playoff "pods", why would Byrnes schedule a NW or Dutch Fork, knowing they will almost certainly meet in the playoffs due to cross bracketing not happening. Obviously for a gate, but we all know no one wants to play a good opponent twice in a season, ESPECIALLY if you won the first time around.
The pods have an additional effect, it guarantees that the first round opponent will be from an adjacent region. That results in less travel time and cost, improved gate & concessions revenues. (Beep, beep, beep..... cha-ching!!!!)
FootballFan4343 wrote:I too am absolutely FLOORED that 4A schools are giving up the 11th game and potential revenue. Easily leaving 25-30k on the table. Even the WORST 4A teams clear 10-12k for a home football game. Keep in mind that NO OTHER sport actually makes money in this state, the other sports actually operate off the money football brings in. I am sure at some schools, basketball might make money, but as a whole, in South Carolina, football is the only that actually turns a profit.
Consider this a minor "win" for the more competitive teams. There would have been 21 games in the 11th week, there will now be 16 games in the new week 1 of a 5 week playoff. The least competitive teams lose a home (and away) game every other year, but the top 16 teams get that extra home playoff game.

I guess the smaller/less competitive schools think the other benefits of this system out-weights the loss of a home game every other year. They probably figured that a 10 game schedule was a foregone conclusion as soon as they announced the classification was going to be 42 schools.

Unless you are South Florence where all games are "travel games" except West Florence....

Any "adjacent" region opponent would still be 1:15 to 2:30 away. That's better than the 3:10 trip to Westside we're facing this year.

aka: The long bus ride of despair™

BTW, I don't agree with this proposal, I'm just analyzing why a majority of 5A coaches and ADs want to do this.

Is there somewhere on the Internet which contains the minutes of this meeting? I checked schsl.org and could not locate any info.

Top four from each Region no at large in Upper State

Lower State is different, but it all comes down to Region except for one at large and no one seems to know how the at large will be selected.

....
4 x 7 Regions = 28 teams. From your statement there is one at large. Does that mean there are 3 more automatic qualifiers in the lower state (ie 5-6 automatics in the 8 team region VII)?

16 teams from UPPER would be Top 4 in each Region

16 teams from LOWER would be Top 5 in each Region with one at large according to the word I got... but he had no idea how the at large would be selected because they said "there would be no points system for the playoffs" when they talked about predetermined brackets. How do you seed the four areas of the bracket with three Regions? Who gets the other #1 seed in that portion of the bracket?

Upperstate Bracket would look like this: (Region Champs #1 Seed in each portion of the bracket)
R1 #1
R2 #1
R3 #1
R4 #1

Lower state only has three Regions so divide that evenly by 4?

R5 #1

R6 #1

R7 #1

?? <-- who is the other #1 seed? The next best #2 record? Oh wait, we don't have a points system? We forgot about that? What do we do? DUH????

Welcome to the world that classes A through AAA have been living in now for years. I like the new playoff idea because it allows teams to save on travel costs which will more than make up for the lost gate revenue of the 11th game. Also the new system allows for more geographic rivalries between the new 5A schools and some the smaller schools around them which could produce some monster gates for the schools. For instance Greenwood can now play Emerald again with out having to worry about playoff points. This game would be a huge gate and be a game the city of Greenwood could look forward to every year. Also some of you are right in terms on some 5A schools who are less competitive possibly loading the non-region up with cupcakes to make the overall record look better but isn't the point of high school football for the kids to have fun? Who wants to get their brains beat in week after week? Nobody does, what's the fun in that? But for all of you complaining about a 1 win team getting into the playoffs under the old points system this prevents that from happening. Now teams must win games in region play to get in. Will you loose some of those games non-region like NW vs Dorman? Maybe but if those teams are truly good they will meet up in the playoffs anyway which we be even more exciting than a regular season match up just because it would be a win or go home scenario. I'm glad it's changing because I hated the points system with a passion. The points system sucked because you could load up the schedule with tough games and gain more by loosing than winning in some cases.

next year in our region 2 we will have 6 teams but only 4 play football.
96,ABBEVILLE,LIBERTY and SOUTHSIDE CHRISTIAN so we will have 7 non region games.
I hope 96 and EMERALD will keep playing each other.who knows how they will fill 2 of
those non region games.most teams will be playing region games in weeks 6 and 7.
I am not a fan of 2 teams playing each other 2 times in the regular season. but I hate
having to drive 75 or 80 miles for a non region game.

Actually, in a 5 team region, you can be 1-9 and get in the playoffs if that 1 win is a Region win as I pointed out before:
"let's say Byrnes goes 0-6 in non-region, but manages to win 1 Region Game and you end up with this:

Dorman..... 4-0
Spartanburg 3-1
B Springs.... 2-2
Byrnes....... 1-3
Gaffney..... 0-4

The 1-9 Rebels make the playoffs!"

Region Wins are not always a good judge of a team's ability... for example, looking at the Region above. If Byrnes were the #4 from Region 3 next season and matched up against the #1 team from Region 2, who you betting on?

Yes, there were some flaws with the points system, but there are even more problems with this proposal...
