Batesburg returned the opening kickoff for a td. Newberry drove the ball most of the night. Newberry scored with no time left to end the half to make it 28-7, then some commotion broke out after a late hit on the xp. Players from the home team yelling profanity and flipping off the visiting fans leaving the field.
2nd half, the late hits continued causing the game to be called with under 20 seconds left after a BL player late hit one of our linemen and a melee almost erupted. There are a few players for Batesburg that should have been ejected, as well as the head coach for his conduct. Walked all the way to mid field to confront a ref after a call and had to be pulled off the field, then was cussing at the refs at the end of the half. One BL player grabbed one of our linemen by the facemask while on the ground and then punched him, but wasn't ejected. Another was late hitting players nearly every play.
Newberry finishes the regular season 3-1 and will travel to Chesnee next week.

All I know is I lost a lot of respect for the BL program last night due to the behavior of their coaches and players. The series between the 2 schools goes back to 1926, and it has always been a clean but hard hitting series. Last night was uncalled for and something should be done about it.
The refs didn't help matters by allowing the players that were doing the dirty play to remain in the game long after they should have been ejected. Any time law enforcement has to enter the playing field during a contest, the refs have failed to control the game.

Down here in the Lowcountry, every other school knows what to expect when playing the Patriots. Dirty hits, playing after the whistle, lack of discipline, lots of penalties, and anything but a clean football game. Wasn't always that way, but ever since the days of Carlos Dunlap and Robert Quinn, that is their game plan.......try to intimidate the opposition.

If the Batesburg plan was to intimidate us last night, it worked 0%. They had 17 yards of total offense in the first half, rushed for 5 yards for the game, and had less than 170 yards for the game. We rushed for more yards than they had total. Most of their yards came when we had a lot of backups in.

Good win for Newberry. I don't believe Chesnee will present too much of an obstacle for you. B-L at Abbeville, old rivals, there has always been mutual respect here. Hope that continues.

I hope we have a great clean game next week. I have some great memories from Abbeville vs BL over the years. Always been a good series.
