Am I mistaken but didn't Eastside have an OC a few years ago that was from a college in Illinois? He was supposed to be a guru, I think they even had two really good seasons? What happened to that guy? It was around the time McManus flopped at Spartanburg..
It's crazy all these years watching football I've seen Greenville , Mauldin, Hillcrest, Mann, Blue Ridge, Travelers Rest, Eastside,Riverside, even Wade Hampton...
But very few can remain competitive or keep coaches..is it purely a money thing.??
On paper Mauldin should not be bad at football? There's too many kids.
Then again I still dread the day Dorman actually hires a young guy who plays the way kids want to play...3000 students..man that's a sleeping giant.
I think the guy you are talking about from Eastside is now a head coach in Idaho. He sells an offensive system much like McManus does.
I have always wondered the same thing about large schools, if you have 2,000 plus students how can you not find at least 25-30 guys that want to be great at football as a nucleus? The rest of the roster would be role players/practice players. Wando (until Lucy Beckham) was always one of the largest schools but consistently average or below average in football. Is it coaching? Apathy from the community, district, admin in the building?
Money can be issue, but a lot of times coaches are not in for the money, just look up north in NC. Their coaches are vastly under paid but most of the great ones continue to plug along when they could possibly move south (we do see at least 1 or 2 NC guy leave state and grab a SC job, especially Horry County. Stipends for a HC in NC are less than most places in SC assistant stipends). I think the bigger issues with the schools you named in Greenville is that the HC is expected to be a classroom teacher whereas other places they can be an AD or other faculty where they do not have classroom responsibilities. The 8-4 environment and energy at schools is something that should not be overlooked when keeping or attracting a coach.
