Looks like decent weather today. Interesting match up DF vs Summerville. Looks like both can score points- will probably come down to which teams’ defense plays the best.

Fear The Fox…
Hate that I cannot make this game but my dad's surgery at 2pm today made it impossible for me to attend. I was hoping to meet you DFoldMan. Summerville's offense is solid and I believe will be able to score. The DF defense is scary good so this is a matchup that I look forward to watching. Summerville's defense has improved all year and played their best game of the season last week against Sumter. If someone told me we would hold Sumter to 6 points I would have probably laughed. We are peaking on both sides of the ball at the right time. Losing #22 Washington earlier this year certainly hurts. At 215 lbs and speedy he gave defenses alot to think about. We however have others who have stepped up. Hoping for a great game. If Summerville can pull it off they will have to score more than anyone has on DF this year. I just hope we can slow the DF offense down a little to keep us in the game into the 4th qtr.

Thursday games completed and the results, I think, was what most people expected. Clinton & Abbeville won big.

Friday games:

1: Dutch Fork vs Summerville:

Dutch Fork is the platinum standard all teams in 5A D1 have to measure themselves against. I have not seen DF play, but am familiar with TK's teams going back to his West Charlotte teams. He is an outstanding coach and certainly knows how to surround himself with very high quality assistant coaches. Success breeds success and kids that want to be "the best" generally want to play for "the best". NO....I am NOT suggesting any improprieties via recruiting....outside the scope of this thread. There are many many outstanding young men whose families will not relocate into the DF area for any number of reasons. That being said, back to the football thoughts. DF has appeared to weather early season injuries and seems to be peaking at just the right time....playoff time. I don't think they were really tested much since the weather shortened game against Spartanburg. Interesting is that I don't see anyone saying they played a "softer" schedule and that would be a liability going into today's game. DF is loaded with quality players and proven coaches that know how to prepare for games and make necessary adjustments during games.

Summerville is a rising powerhouse in the lower state. After being in the shadow of Fort Dorchester for years, the Green Wave is now back in the spotlight. This team may be seen as having a "softer" schedule as it appears, on paper, the lower state 5A teams do not have as many power programs as they may have had in the past. Summerville has earned their trip to the championship game and kudos are due them for that achievement. I understand they have some quality players, but maybe not as many as DF and as the game goes on, the disparity, especially in overall quality depth, may be a limiting factor.

Both teams have demonstrated the ability to score, but DF has consistently proven to have a most stingy defense. Totally football-speak, but defense wins championships. I think DF takes this one by 14+.

2: Westside vs South Florence:

This is a rematch of last year's championship won by Westside 34-32.

Westside is one very loaded team......put together within the rules as set forth by the SCHSL. They are a prolific scoring team and the qb is a South Carolina Gamecock commit.....who will have to put his time in behind Lanorris Sellers, who lead South Florence to the championship 2 years ago 57-30 over Northwestern. Kudos to both teams....South Florence in the championship game for the third year in a row and Westside in the championship game for the second year in a row. Everyone love a rematch game! Again, both teams earned their place in today's game and both are quality teams. Kudos to South Florence for making their playoff run from the #4 seed into the championship game.

They both "know the routine" of playing in the championship game, so that is a non-factor.

Honestly :-) my heart is with South Florence, but my head says Westside. I just don't think South Florence's defense will be able to hold Westside's offense down enough for the upset. Sorry, SFBandDad. I think Westside by 17+.

Saturday games:

1: Belton-Honea Path vs Oceanside Collegiate:

Both teams come into the game from the #2 seeding position and each took out the #1 seed (Upper State was Belton-Honea Path over Mountain View Prep and Lower State was Oceanside Collegiate over Loris). BHP brings a 13-1 record into the game while OCA is 10-3. Many people have been watching BHP all years as the favorite to take the championship. For many, there is a sense of "private vs charter" in this game and many were very happy to see BHP take out MVP. Now, the conquest is the other charter, OCA. Again, MVP and OCA are operating within the rules established by the SCHSL. Let's leave it at that on that topic.

Football wise, BHP scores more per game that OCA, while the defenses give up about the same. Will OCA's defense be able to stop BHP's high scoring offense? Defense wins championships and games are decided in the trenches. I think both teams will score, but BHP prevails in a closer game than many expect. BHP by 7 or less.

2: Northwestern vs Irmo:

This is the game so many have been looking forward to. Northwestern brings a 13-0 record and an extremely potent offense to the game. Irmo comes in at 12-1 with their only blemish being a loss to Dutch Fork by 10 (14-24). By virtue of that quality loss, many people are giving an edge to Irmo on strength of schedule. Northwestern's potent offense is actually very balanced while Irmo's offense is centered on the qb, AJ Brand....SC Gatorade High School Football Player of the Year and Virginia Tech commit.

I think game comes down to all the stereotypical football "stuff". Who will make mistakes, like penalties and/or turnovers. Will Northwestern's defense be able to contain Brand. Will Irmo's defense be able to limit Northwestern's possessions to keep the score down.

One possible intangible is that Northwestern played Gaffney with an excellent all around running/passing/scrambling quarterback. I don't think Irmo's defense has seen an offense as overall balanced and strong as Northwestern's. I think Northwestern's "scout" offense can more effectively simulate Irmo's offense than Irmo's "scout" offense can effectively simulate Northwestern's offense.

This should be an outstanding game, but I think Northwestern will pull this one out in a higher scoring game than many expect. It would not surprise me to see both teams in the 40-50 point range. I say Northwestern by 12.

We shall see how these games go, and may NONE of the kids get hurt and may they all keep their teenaged emotions in check.

Be true to your school!
